Central New York Orienteering invites you to join us for the 2008 North American Orienteering Championships. Three competitive orienteering formats on three new and unique venues over a three-day period with friends new and old should all add up to a wonderful early fall "O" experience in upstate New York.

Friday Sept. 26 — Sprint event at Green Lakes State Park (Fayetteville), a semi-urban and popular park with an excellent mix of forested and open rolling terrain with many trails and man-made cultural features will afford a fast and furious competition. The map is a major upgrade of an older "local" O-map to the present IOF Sprint Standards. Scale is 1:5,000 with a 2.5-meter contour interval. [Park website]
Saturday Sept. 27 — Middle-distance event at the NYS Salmon River Fish Hatchery (Altmar), a little-known section of state forest lands adjacent to and under the jurisdiction of the Hatchery in the Tug Hill Region. Measuring at just under 2 sq. km, we believe that this area has some of the finest and most complex glaciated terrain in the Northeast. The area has such detailed kames and esker features that a special LIDAR flight was needed to be able to create a complete and accurate contour base. The forest is an extremely open mix of deciduous and mature conifer forest with very little evidence of recent logging activities. This will all add up to an excellent test of speed and navigation. New map with a scale of 1:10,000 and a 2.5-meter contour interval. [Venue website]
Sunday Sept. 28 — Long Classic event at Klondike State Forest (West Amboy). While still very detailed, this map has a more traditional north country feel to the terrain with subtle glaciated contours on larger slopes and hills. Much evidence of old abandoned farmsteads consisting of stone walls and large rockpiles are scattered throughout the mostly deciduous forest. New map using LIDAR and high resolution orthophotos with a scale of 1:10,000 and interval of 2.5 meter. [County map website]
All maps were field checked and drafted by Mark Dominie with assistance from Barb Dominie in the spring of 2008.
Complete USOF class structure for championship events will be offered for all three races. Sprint races will be using a two-stage format with a compressed three-course formula. This event will also be the 2008 Sprint Series Finals. Watch for details. Full standard course structure will be used for Middle and Classic races. Additionally, recreational (non-competitive) courses of White, Yellow, and Orange, with no pre-registration necessary, will be available on Saturday and Sunday.
Day 1 — Sprints at Green Lakes State Park, Fayetteville, NY — Take Exit 3E from I-481 and head east on US 5 & SR 92. At 1.3 km from I-481, bear left continuing on US 5. After an additional 3.3 km in the village of Fayetteville, turn north (left) at signal light onto SR 257. In 2.9 km, continue straight at a 3-way stop onto SR 290. After an additional 2.5 km, turn right at main Park Entrance. O signs will be posted from Fayetteville.
Day 2 — Middle Distance at Salmon River Fish Hatchery, Altmar, NY — Take Exit 34 from I-81 and head east on SR 104 for 5.5 km turning north (left) onto CR 22. Go 7.1 km to stop sign at SR 13. Cross SR 13 and continue north on CR 22 for an additional 340 meters then turn left onto CR 52. After a very short 170 meters, turn left onto Pulaski Street and go approximately 300 meters to APW Elementary School and event parking. There will be a 1.4 km walk to the start from parking, about 15-20 min. at normal walking pace. Follow directions and/or signs for correct parking and PLEASE do not drive to or use the main parking area at the Hatchery as it is very limited and used by public visitors.
Day 3 — Long Classic will take place in Klondike State Forest, West Amboy, NY — Take Exit 33 from I-81 and head East on SR 69. At 11.3km from I-81 turn South (right) onto CR 26 and proceed just under 500 meters to the first left hand turn onto Cusson Dr. Proceed about 200 meters to Hidden Acres Campground on left or park along road ONLY where directed. Since all parking is on private property we must asses a $2/car fee for this day only. Depending on parking location you may have to walk as much as 1.2 km to start. White/Yellow courses have a separate start an additional 600 meters beyond Advanced courses start.
All sites to be used for this event are considered off limits for any purposes by any competitors wishing to be eligible for official scoring. Unfortunately there are no nearby mapped areas with many of the same general terrain types of all three sites. The closest similar area is at the site of the 2000 U.S. Classic Championships and 2001 U.S. Short and Long Championships in Winona, about 40 minutes north of Syracuse. Maps with courses from these events can be purchased for $3 each and a short demo course will be posted on this web site and set up in the forest by Friday, September 19, as a "self-serve" example of mapping, course design, and placement the week prior to the Championships. Please specify 1:10,000 or 1:15,000 and/or any specific course desired on entry form when ordering.
Childcare will be available for a fee during the competition only. Watch this web site for updates or contact the registrar for details.
SportIdent electronic punching will be used on all the competitive courses throughout the event. Competitors must either own an e-card or rent one for $2.00 per day of competition.
Saturday evening a catered buffet at the Castaways Riverside Restaurant in Brewerton, NY. Located just off CR 37 on the north side of the confluence of the Oneida River and Oneida Lake, with a setting along the Lake, a full menu with choices of entries in a large, private dining hall will make a memorable gathering. Cost is $18 for adults, $9 for children 11 years and under, free for children 2 and under. A Junior Team Ice Cream dessert fund raiser is also planned.
Dinner Menu:
Roast Beef Au Jus
Smoked Pit Ham
Scalloped or Au Gratin Potatoes
Baked Pasta
Tossed Garden Salad with 3 Dressings
Cabbage Salad
Fresh Vegetable Assortment
Freshly Baked Breads and Rolls
Coffee & Tea
Long-sleeved, brick-red T-shirt at an anticipated cost of $10. Photo coming soon.
Each day's race will be treated separately in the awarding of the North American Championships awards to those eligible individuals in each class (see USOF/COF rules). In addition, overall awards will be given to the top three individuals per class of the three-race weekend using a scoring formula based on time. North American Championships awards for Sprint- and Middle-distance races will be presented after Saturday dinner. Classic-distance North American Championships awards and 3-day total awards will be presented at the end of competition on Sunday.
Fees are set on a staggered scale to encourage early entries but we understand that many individuals may be uncertain far in advance whether they can get time off from work or find acceptable airfare. Register early anyway. Complete Refunds of entry fees for any cancellation will be given up to September 2nd! Below are entry fees for adults, 19 years of age and older, for each race individually or for all three races when postmarked by each deadline date. Fees for juniors are in parentheses. Entries by competitors residing in U.S. must be accompanied by full payment to be considered official and complete and receive assigned start times. Individuals not residing in the United States may pay with US funds upon arrival at registration but still must have entries sent by postmarked dates to be eligible for the stated fee. E-mail entries using the USOF standard format are acceptable but will not be considered complete until payment is received.

CNYO is known for its very efficient (compressed) start windows within all acceptable guidelines and rules. At an average A event it is common for a start window as short as 1.5 hours. We will be using a similar structure at this event so consider this fact if thinking that requesting specific start times will be advantageous.
Check back here for periodic updates and additional information.
