18th Annual Scout-O
Saturday-Sunday, November 5-6, 2011
Highland Forest County Park, Fabius

For the 18th year in a row, the Central New York Orienteering Club is happy to offer an opportunity for Scouts and other youth groups a chance to learn and practice the art of using a map and compass. As has been tradition, we offer two separate events.

Saturday: On Saturday morning, starting at the Sawmill from 8:45 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., members of the CNYO club will give guided map hikes to groups of youths and their leaders. (Leaders are required to participate in the map hike.) On the map hike, youth and leaders can expect to learn things like orienting a map, map symbols, terrain features, catching and safety features, plus much more. The use of the compass will only be lightly touched upon as it is more important to be able to read the map correctly. The club is hoping to offer a few map hikes that explain more advanced techniques used in the sport of orienteering for those people that have been coming to this event for many years. The advanced map hike is only available to those that attended for at least three years and have done both events. It is most likely that whole troops or patrols will not be eligible for the advanced hike but individuals can attend if they meet the above requirements. The map hikes should take around an hour or so. On the registration form, you may select a starting time that your group would prefer for the map hike.

In the afternoon, from noon to 2:00 P.M., two courses will be available to troops/patrols/groups to do on their own. Participants will copy the course onto the map they received during the map hike. For this part of the day, troops are on their own. Club members will be on hand to answer questions but will not be responsible for lost youth so we suggest that leaders plan accordingly. The courses will be open until 4:00 P.M. but we will pick up the master maps at 2:00 P.M. so that we know everyone should be back by 4:00 P.M.

Sunday: Sunday is the patrol competition day starting at the Arab Hill camp. Two sized groups (for each sex and co-eds) are available. A small group is any group of 3 to 5. A large group is any group 6 to 8 in size. During the competition, youth must be in at least pairs but can go out in larger groups. No individual competitors are allowed and can lead to disqualification of their patrol/group. There will be a mandatory patrol leader's meeting at 9:15 A.M. (to go over the rules) with map handouts immediately following. (Leaders should plan on having their groups registered before this time so they don't miss out on the instructions.) The mass start will happen at 10:00 A.M. and the event has a time limit of 90 minutes. This event has a different format than Saturday in that youth can go to the controls in any order they wish. The time limit is the deciding factor as to what controls each group/pair should attempt to find. Awards for each group size in each category will be handed out soon after the finish of the event.
