Central New York Orienteering

24th Annual Scout O
Friday-Sunday, November 3-5, 2017
Highland Forest Park, Fabius, NY — Pines Camp (42.83205 N, 75.92329 W)

For the 24th year in a row, the Central New York Orienteering Club is happy to offer Scouts and other youth groups a chance to learn and practice the art of using a map and compass. As has been tradition, we offer two separate events.
Saturday Morning Map Hikes: Members of the CNYO club will give guided map hikes to groups of youths and their leaders. (Leaders are required to participate in the map hike.) Basic map hike: Youth and leaders can expect to learn things like orienting a map, map symbols, terrain features, catching and safety features, plus much more. Compass use will only be lightly touched upon as it is more important to be able to read the map correctly. Advanced map hike, for those who have attended both days of this event for at least three years: Club members will explain more advanced techniques used in the sport of orienteering.
Map hikes start from 8:45 AM to 11:00 AM and take around an hour or so. On the registration form, you may select a starting time that your group would prefer for the map hike.

Saturday Afternoon Courses: Two courses will be available for troops/patrols/groups to do on their own. Club members will be on hand to answer questions but will not accompany groups or be responsible for lost youth, so we suggest that leaders plan accordingly. Courses start between noon and 2:00 PM and must be completed by 4:00 PM.

Registration Form and Waiver: Each group must submit a registration form for the event and a completed waiver for each participant, whether youth or adult.

Fees: $7 per person for one day or $10 per person for both days, for entries received by October 30 (postmarked by October 26 if using paper mail; forms can also be scanned and emailed). After October 30, fees are $10 per person for one day or $14 per person for both days (but if late fee affects your ability to attend, please inquire). Registration forms and payment should be sent to: Stacy Pendell, 321 State Route 38, Locke, NY 13092 or sjp16 @ cornell.edu. Registration is not complete until payment is received. Please make checks payable to either "Central New York Orienteering" or "CNYO". We also accept PayPal with a $3 surcharge.

Sunday Patrol Competition: Youth compete in patrols of two sizes, small (3 to 5 people) or large (5 to 8 people). Larger troops/groups must divide into multiple patrols. Each patrol needs a name and a leader. During the competition, patrols may break into smaller groups of at least 2 people to visit controls. Individual competitors are not allowed. This event has a different format than Saturday in that youth can go to the controls in any order they wish. Adults may accompany youth for safety but may not assist youth in locating controls.

8:45 AM: Mandatory patrol leaders' meeting to go over the rules, with map handouts immediately following. (Leaders should plan on having their groups registered before this time so they don't miss out on the instructions.)
Mass start 9:30 AM / time limit 90 minutes

Awards for each group size in each category (for each sex and co-eds) will be handed out soon after the finish of the event.

Directions: Take I-81 to Exit 14 (Tully, NY). Follow Route 80 east for 10 miles, passing through Fabius, to the park entrance on the right. Follow the orange-and-white orienteering signs to the meet headquarters. Here is a locator map.

Camping: Tent camping sites at the Cedars Tenting Area may be reserved at a cost of $20 per group for the weekend. Please indicate on the registration form whether your group will be camping on Friday night, Saturday night, both nights, or not camping.

Help Wanted: Older, orienteering-experienced Scouts may be able to fulfill badge or service requirements by leading map hikes for younger Scouts. Please contact us to volunteer.

Questions: If you have questions about the events, please contact Stacy Pendell (315-729-2894, sjp16 @ cornell.edu), Barb Sleight (315-458-6406, barbsleight @ yahoo.com), or Jim Clark (315-298-3181, jckcjhnr @ frontiernet.net).
