CNYO 2 January 1999 Ski-O/ESG Qualifier Results
Conditions:
The 2 January ski-O held at Gilbert Lake State Park, near Oneonta, was
cold (single digits) and overcast. Snow was thin but skiable on most
trail
sections. There was not enough snow in the off-trail woods for
snowshoeing (a
snowshoe course was planned) or good bushwacking. I really didn't know
until the day before the meet whether this would be a ski-o or a
foot-o, so I planned for both possibilities, prayed for snow, and hoped
we wouldn't get some condition that would eliminate both of them. I
figured if I could put the controls out on skis (I did), it would be a
ski-o, but I would have foot-o courses for anyone who preferred that or
wanted to save wear on their skis. This worked out pretty well. I
think the weather reports and the general lack of snow probably scared
off some people, and it was not exactly the kind of day that would
attract a first-timer.
