Threats of cloudbursts may have kept some Troops home, but 30 Scouts plus 12 Leaders/Parents, 4 BINGO college students (from Mike Olson's orienteering class at SUNY Binghamton), 7 CNYO members and some friends came out to the Spring Training event at Green Lakes Saturday, May 13, 2000. Because of the rainy forecast, the venue was moved at the last moment from Community Garden to Reserved Shelter, where the roof was larger and mosquitos fewer.

Much Applause and Appreciation is due Judy Gianforte, CNYO member from Cazenovia, who not only spent 2 hours Friday afternoon hanging out Yellow and Orange course controls for me, but also returned to work continually from 8:30 am into early afternoon as Chief Registrar/Starter/Finisher.

Pete Dady, Barb Sleight, Barb Dominie, and Eric Smith instructed skills sessions on Map Colors and Symbols, Control Feature Descriptions, Using the Compass, Pacing and Distance, respectively. The sequence of stations was rearranged a bit from previous years, so that all but one group atended the Map Reading session BEFORE they went to the lesson on Control Features (makes more sense this way). Judy blew the whistle as a signal for each rotation.

After the final lesson, Mark Dominie took all four groups on a 10-minute Map Hike that he designed with the help of his daughter Ramana and her friend Nichole. Meanwhile, other groups and individuals were arriving to register and start on courses, a choice of White, Yellow, Orange, and Green. All the while Judy covered Registration, Starts, and Finishes almost singlehandedly!

Many youth finished the easy White course for practice, then went out again on either Yellow or Orange. In the end there were over 35 separate groups starting and finishing. Fortunately, the weather was fine, if a bit muggy, for running during the day.

About half the control markers had been brought in before the rain struck again with vengence around 3 pm. Sunday afternoon I retrieved the rest of them (except for 4 rather remote). SINCERE THANKS TO ALL HELPERS MENTIONED ABOVE. What a crew! Just think where we'll all be and what we'll be doing a year from now!

A couple new additions to club equipment made this event very special. Since the early 90's when the club's FINISH banner was "lost" in Oneonta, we've been without one. Mark Dominie unveiled a beautiful new FINISH banner Saturday. Not only that, a colorful new 4'x5' club banner with the club logo filling the center, the letters CNYO vertically at the left side of the logo, and the letters USOF vertically to the right. Both banners are hand-crafted by Mark. Look for them at your next local event, and for the CNYO banner as a gathering place at up-coming "A" events. They are lovely.
