Conditions for the Senior Games/Daddy-O June 16th at Green Lakes State Park ran the gamut from partly cloudy to increasingly cloudy, 70's, to heavy rain from 2 pm on.

Empire State Senior Games (ESSG) age groups are 5-year increments beginning with age 50. These ages fit into the USOF course/class structure on Green and Brown courses. However, because only a few competitors in the Senior Games are experienced orienteers, I design courses shorter than standard, and given our location at Green Lakes State Park, shorter courses are contained pretty much within the trail network making it difficult to set truly advanced-course controls and legs. This works out fairly well for the seniors and they always seem quite satisfied with their courses. This year I added a "Copper" course- 2.8k Yellow with a few Orange legs- for less experienced participants at the intermediate level.

In addition, we hold a clinic for the seniors and set a White course for practice. This year there were 14 clinic participants and 9 White Course finishers who all received gold ESSG keychain tabs.

State Senator John Defrancisco announced during the Saturday night social at Hotel Syracuse that the 2002 Empire State Senior Games (ESSG 20th Anniversary) will be held at SUNY Cortland.
