Map:
Hammond Hill State Forest.
Format:
Set 'em and Get 'em
Come at 6pm and get a few markers to set, then go look for the ones everyone
else has put out.
If you have orienteered before but don't feel confident about setting controls, give it a try! or just buy a map and find what others have set.
Instruction: If you're new to orienteering and/or want instruction, come a little early and tell the meet director and he'll buttonhole a CNYO member to help you out.
Fees: Usual $2 per map weeknight training fee applies; no member discounts.
Starts: Meet at the southern end of the forest, at the junction of Canaan Rd. and Redman Run. Starts any time after 6.
Directions:
From NYS Rt 79, east of Ithaca:
at the east side of Slaterville Springs,
turn left onto Harford Rd. Follow it past the junction with Hammond Hill Rd,
cross the creek bridge, turn left (north) on Canaan Rd. Continue a few
hundred meters past the end of the pavement to the Canaan/Redman
intersection, or park at the pavement's end on the snowplow
turnaround and walk in. There is less dirt road coming from Harford Rd.
than from Irish Settlement (see next set of directions).
From NYS Rt 13 between Dryden and Ithaca:
turn
south on Irish Settlement Rd (sign likely still gone, across the
street from George Rd), go 2 or 3 miles to Hammond Hill Rd on the
left. Follow Hammond Hill Rd to the Y with Star Stanton Rd, and take
the left branch (Star Stanton) up just a little beyond the top of the
hill. Turn right (south) on Canaan Rd, and continue downhill until
you reach Redman Run joining from the left.
Don't try coming up Star Stanton Rd from NYS Rt 38--the upper part is severely eroded, and even with 4-wheel drive you might not make it.
