The Gilbert Lake Score-O was held in the rain/snow/sleet on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Gilbert Lake State Park, Laurens, NY,  about 13 miles northeast of Oneonta.

During the prior weeks Verna Engstrom-Heg (CNYO Oneonta) had single-handedly surveyed the entire park for fifty suitable and challenging control sites and hung 40-, 50-, 60-, or 70-point orange-and-white control flags. On the morning of the event Gary Brackett (CNYO Oneonta) pre-ran the course to vet it and dusted snow off the flags so they would be visible.

Starting at 11 am from the Briggs Lodge at the southwest corner of the main lake, seventeen folks dashed about up and down hills through the woods to accumulate as many points as possible within the 3-hour time limit. The total score possible if one could visit all 50 controls was 1800 points.  Entrants received pre-printed maps and control description/punch cards at registration.

At the shout of "Go!" it was apparent that it would be an interesting contest, as orienteers scattered out in all directions from the pavilion. Punch cards handed in later showed that nobody reached all 50 controls, but that every control was visited by at least someone.

Ages ranged from Emily Brackett, 10, to her grandfather Dickson Brackett, 70+, who hiked around the lake during the event and spotted several of the 5-point controls.

Everyone enjoyed the fire crackling in the fireplace and Verna's hot chili, crackers, fruit, hot or cold drinks afterwards and the colorful certificates she prepared with each person's name and score written on them. Two new members joined the club before leaving.
