Central New York Orienteering invites you to join us for the Northeast Regional Sprint-, Middle-, and Classic-Distance Championships this autumn at Hope Lake town park (Virgil, NY) and
Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture (Cortland, NY). Three competitive races in two days, new maps, unique terrain, beautiful scenery, and getting together with friends should add up to a wonderful early-autumn O' experience.

Maps and Terrain: The Sprint- and Middle-Distance races (Day 1) are based at Hope Lake, a small town park with a beach and picnic area within the borders of a mid-sized Nordic Ski center. The terrain is typical central New York rolling hill and valley on abandoned farmland. Forested areas consisting of mostly open hardwoods combined with a moderate trail network and some open fields in the competition area will make for some quick-paced racing.

The Classic-Distance race (Day 2) is at the Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture just south of the city of Cortland. The terrain is somewhat unique to the central New York region with a great deal of subtle and intricate glacial-contour detail (kames, eskers, and depressions) but not very much net climb. There are many water features (small marshes, streams) and almost no rock features. The forest is largely quite open with a few open meadows and a moderate trail network. The map scale is 1:5,000 for the Sprint- and 1:10,000 for the Middle- and Classic-Distance races; they have been fieldchecked by Mark Dominie.

Courses: Complete USOF class structure will be offered for all three races. The Sprint-Distance race will be using only three courses (think "Young Legs", "Old Eyes", and "Strong Lungs") while the full standard course structure will be used for Middle- and Classic-Distance races. Additionally, recreational (non-competitive) courses of White, Yellow, and Orange, with no pre-registration necessary, will be available each day. Day 1 courses are designed by Barb Dominie and Day 2 courses are designed by Ann Leonard.
