The following set of results from the Finger Lakes Rogaine 2007 is
unfortunately marred slightly by inaccurate placement of some of the
controls in the context of the map. In particular 77 and 80 were problems,
but several of the other controls were apparently very "uni-directional"
because of defects in the mapping that made them look much more like the
map if approached in some particular direction (that used by the course
setter) than in other logical attack routes. These included 45, 66, 69, 75,
and 76. At the time of initial results coming in, because many people were
finding these control markers with no difficulty I had not been registering
the complaints from a few teams, just not taking them properly seriously.
Later, it became evident what the problem is, but there is really no way at
this point to make a uniform compensation. There would certainly be no way
to compensate the large amounts of time that some persistent teams lost on
particular controls. Thus, while the general order of scoring on a global
scale is probably very indicative of relative quality of performance, in
detail some of the teams with close scores may have been separated as much
by luck in their route choice as by orienteering skill. In addition, two
teams forgot to punch at one control and were not awarded points, since it
had been announced in the pre-event instructions that only controls punched
on the control card could be counted in the scoring, not signatures on the
sign-in sheet (many of which will not be removed from the woods for some
weeks). I hope that nonetheless all of the entrants in the Rogaine got much pleasure from the lovely area, the beautiful weather, and the interesting variation in types of vegetation and forest management, and the wide variety of food available at the hash house. Next time I'm the course setter, I will try to be more vigilant about this version of control placement error. Eric Smith | ||||||||||||||
